Blake Johnson, Head of Security Services at Virtual IT Group (VITG), has been recognised as one of the CSO30 Australia 2024 honourees, celebrating his outstanding contributions to cybersecurity leadership. This prestigious award highlights Blake’s remarkable efforts in transforming VITG’s security services and his innovative approach to shaping the future of cybersecurity.
Blake took on the role of Head of Security Services in July 2023, tasked with building and leading a new team to deliver VITG’s Managed Security as a Service (MSaaS) product line. In just one year, Blake has grown the service from the ground up, delivering 24/7 support to clients across a range of industries, including not-for-profits, professional services, and construction. His efforts have resulted in a 60% client adoption rate of MSaaS and a 150% growth in its client base.
Blake’s leadership has been instrumental in operationalising VITG’s MSaaS offering, ensuring that security services are accessible and tailored to the unique needs of each client. A key highlight of his achievements includes helping a not-for-profit client secure ISO27001 certification in just six months, enabling the client to win and retain a major government contract.
In addition to overseeing the development of new security services, Blake has fostered a strong security culture within VITG, encouraging collaboration across teams and promoting professional development opportunities for staff interested in cybersecurity roles. His work in this area has sparked growing interest in security among the broader VITG workforce, with more team members pursuing certifications and aligning with the company’s long-term security strategy.
“Blake’s achievements have surpassed expectations and have been key to VITG’s success in the cybersecurity space,” said Chris Troncone, Chief Customer Officer at VITG. “His innovative approach and ability to lead a rapidly growing team have set VITG apart as a leader in Managed Security as a Service. We look forward to seeing his continued impact as we expand our security offerings.”
Blake’s attention to detail, methodical processes, and creative problem-solving skills have earned him a reputation as a flexible, empowering leader who supports his team’s professional development while ensuring that client security needs are met to the highest standard. His influence has extended beyond VITG, with his thought leadership through webinars and content creation, educating the wider market on critical cybersecurity issues.
