As it opened to the public, the National Communications Museum (NCM) faced the challenge of connecting and operating various interactive displays. With the help of VITG, it established a solid IT foundation and set the stage for an immersive visitor experience.

A museum is born

Opening in September 2024, NCM chronicles the evolution of communication in Australia, featuring artifacts from First Nations communication methods to modern technologies like TikTok. This innovative museum offers an extensive collection, from 19th-century telegram boys’ bags to early Internet hardware, creating a rich, interactive experience for visitors.

Establishing a technology-first approach

NCM’s collaboration with VITG began in 2018 as a Managed Services partnership to address their foundational IT needs. This relationship proved crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic when NCM had to adapt its operational strategies while building its infrastructure.

Co-CEO Anna Prenc reflects, ‘VITG’s support allowed us to pivot quickly during the pandemic. They became part of our team, helping us navigate unprecedented challenges.’

Unique challenges faced

Creating a museum that integrates historical artifacts with modern technology posed unique challenges, which required VITG’s innovative solutions:

  • Complex layout requirements: Extensive connectivity was needed for interactive displays throughout the museum. ‘We had to ensure every corner was covered,’ Prenc explained. VITG meticulously mapped Wi-Fi points for optimal connectivity.
  • Integration of vintage technology: Showcasing vintage computers required specialised support to ensure functionality. ‘It wasn’t just about modern tech; we wanted to honour the past,’ Prenc noted.
  • Rapid deployment needs: Quick solutions were essential without compromising quality as deadlines loomed. ‘VITG’s team rose to the occasion,’ Prenc recalled.
  • Creative problem-solving: The project faced unexpected challenges, but VITG’s proactive attitude helped navigate these complexities. ‘Their approach was always, ‘Let’s find a solution!’

Services and solutions delivered

VITG provided a comprehensive suite of IT-managed services tailored to NCM’s needs:

  • Wi-Fi mapping and connectivity: robust internet access was critical for interactive displays, so VITG mapped Wi-Fi points throughout the museum.
  • Hardware support for interactive displays: VITG integrated vintage technology, allowing authentic engagement with historical devices. ‘Their expertise was invaluable,’ Prenc said.
  • Continuous IT support: round-the-clock support ensured minimal disruption during setup and operations. ‘Having a team on standby was a huge relief,’ Prenc added.
  • Cybersecurity measures: strong protocols were implemented to protect sensitive data. ‘VITG helped us navigate the complexities of data protection,’ she noted.
  • Cloud services management: VITG optimised cloud infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Backup and disaster recovery solutions: safeguarding NCM’s archives was prioritised to ensure data security. ‘They provided peace of mind,’ Prenc said.
  • Project management support: VITG facilitated effective management of ongoing projects, ensuring stakeholder alignment.
  • Innovative solutions for future exhibits: VITG contributed ideas for educational programs and hands-on workshops for upcoming initiatives.

Prenc highlighted the role of VITG’s Customer Success Manager, Erica Gribova, in maintaining the organisation’s IT needs. ‘Her ability to manage the basics meant we had very few worries,’ she remarked.

Outcomes and benefits

The partnership between NCM and VITG has yielded numerous positive outcomes:

  • Enhanced visitor engagement: interactive displays allow guests to explore various technologies, connecting the past with the present. ‘We want our visitors to feel that connection,’ Prenc explained.
  • Innovative exhibit capabilities: NCM showcases futuristic initiatives that align with current technological trends and ensure relevance.
  • Operational efficiency: VITG’s support allows NCM to focus on educating visitors without IT concerns. ‘Their involvement freed us to be creative,’ Prenc noted.
  • Strong IT foundation: a robust IT infrastructure enables NCM to quickly adapt to future challenges and opportunities. ‘Having a strong foundation means we can innovate without hesitation,’ she emphasised.
  • Creative collaboration opportunities: looking ahead, NCM is eager to explore collaborative projects with VITG, including potential sponsorship arrangements.

Plans executed

Prenc expresses optimism: ‘I like that VITG is always ready for the next challenge.’ NCM’s commitment to showcasing communication evolution will shape future programming.

‘We need educational programs that foster problem-solving skills,’ Prenc states. ‘Our partnership with VITG reflects this vision, and together, we can inspire the next generation of communicators and technologists.’

This partnership exemplifies how managed IT services can be integral to an organisation’s mission. ‘VITG has played an essential role in getting us off the ground,’ Prenc concludes.

As NCM embarks on this exciting chapter, it is a testament to collaboration, creativity, and forward-thinking. With VITG’s support, the museum is preserving the past and actively shaping the future of communication technology in Australia.
