This month the Australian government announced an overhaul on electronic surveillance laws after an intelligence review.

The review included over 200 recommendations to reform the country’s intelligence and security laws which shows how serious the government is about cyber-security.

As a business, what can you do to review and manage your business security? Here are five key areas that we recommend you start looking into for better digital security.

  1. PERFORM A SECURITY RISK ASSESSMENT

Whether it’s through your in-house IT team or Managed IT like our services, the best place you can start is with a risk assessment. Conducting a cyber-security assessment is the same as any other risk assessment, allowing you to identify issues that need to be resolved. For advice on what to include in your risk assessment, contact our friendly and professional IT team.

  1. AUTOMATE YOUR SOFTWARE PATCH MANAGEMENT TO REMEDIATE VULNERABILITIES

Switching to automate patch management will streamline your business operations and can be easily managed through additional support by your software provider, IT team or a Managed IT services.

  1. IMPLEMENT MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (MFA)

MFA is simply requiring two pieces of information to sign in or access certain information. Adding MFA is another way to prevent a security breach by adding an extra layer of protection to your data. Most people and businesses are already using or are at least aware that Multi-Factor Authentication exists. We use it on our smartphones, certain websites and even banking transactions, but are you using it for your business data?

  1. DETECT & RESPOND TO INSIDER THREATS

An internal threat to your business could be business partners, former or current employees or anyone who has information about business security practices, data or computer systems. Identifying insider threats should not be overlooked and can form part of your risk assessment (point 1.).

  1. BACKUP ALL YOUR SYSTEMS TO PROTECT AGAINST RANSOMWARE

Ransomware can target backups kept in cloud-based storage systems which is why we recommend also creating an offline backup.

Understanding how to implement these five security measures can be tricky. Or perhaps your team does not have the time to investigate or work towards better cyber-security. We are here to help.
